It only takes a moment for the Highlands to be transformed by the fickle climate. Under the first flurries of snow, the colors fade and the horizon vanishes into a dark enchantment. For centuries, banishment to this cold and austere universe was the most severe punishment inflicted on those guilty of serious crimes. It amounted to a death sentence. The Highlands have retained a reputation for being dangerous, even haunted, places. Olivier Joly
