During the réttir, the autumn gathering of flocks, herders, shepherds, and volunteers go to search for sheep in the isolated mountains. Under the snow, the sheep become almost invisible. Horses and dogs have been essential companions for survival in rural areas since the beginning of colonization. Every autumn, approximately 150 réttirs are organized throughout the island.
