Children emerge from the Krossnes thermal pool. The names given to Icelandic children are steeped in nature and history. Örn (eagle), Thröstur (thrush), Valur (falcon), and Svanur (swan) are common male names; Erla (wagtail), Lóa (golden plover), Ugla (owl), or Kría (tern) are common female names. A boy might also be named Jökull (glacier), a girl Alda or Bára (wave), or even Katla or Hekla, two very active volcanoes. Furthermore, the names of pagan deities are still used, such as Odin, Thór, Freyr, Freyja, or Baldur. Olivier Joly
