A traditional wafer in Denmark, Norway and Iceland, krumkaka is served flat or rolled, but always decorated with patterns formed by the metal mold in which it is fried.

In Iceland, these cakes were especially prized for festive meals, and the cost of the molds was such that traveling pastry chefs would travel from farm to farm to bake those for families who couldn't afford them. The tradition remains alive in Iceland, and krumkaka are still found on every festive table.

The delicate floral scroll motif also features on wool blankets, tea napkins and table runners in cotton and linen, as well as "ornaments," metal lucky charms to hang in front of a window or at the entrance to a house as a welcome.
