Literally, helm of awe translates to "helm of dread," but this symbol also has the more peaceful (and practical) name of "Viking compass" or Aegishjalmur, in reference to Aegir, god of the ocean of Jotunheim.
It is the most powerful of all magical symbols, providing protection, courage and strength, but also allowing one to overcome one's own fears.
Originally made of lead, it was pressed by warriors between their eyes while pronouncing a ritual phrase.
