Surtsey, the Shape of an Island Emerging from the ocean in 1963 off the coast of Iceland, Surtsey is a small, protected volcanic island. It is expected to disappear within a few decades, as the lava erodes under the onslaught of storms and the ocean. Photographer Hervé Jézéquel and ethnographer Vanessa Doutreleau accompanied Icelandic researchers to create a scientific and poetic portrait of this ephemeral territory.
