Sundhnúkagígar

That's it, the eruption of Sundhnúkagígar, expected and feared for weeks, began yesterday evening, just north of the small town of Grindavik, evacuated since mid-November, and very close to the power plant that supplies the entire Reykjanes peninsula. The 3 km long fissure is causing an eruption visible from Reykjavik, more than 50 km away. The alert level has therefore been raised a notch, knowing that the eruption will last at least weeks, if not months.

The English-language magazine Reykjavik Grapevine provides regular updates on the situation.
