Carbon offsetting: Climeworks issues its first certificates

The Swiss company, which has successfully stored tons of CO2 recovered from the air in Icelandic soil, is attracting more and more industrialists who intend to achieve carbon neutrality with this process. The process remains criticized by environmental groups and researchers.

Climeworks, the Swiss company pioneering the sequestration of CO2 in the air (DAC), announced on January 12 that it had issued its first carbon offset certificates to its corporate clients: Microsoft, the online commerce platform Shopify and the digital payment company Stripe. These certificates, validated by Det Norske Veritas (DNV), the Norwegian leader in classification and independent expertise services, comply with the ISO 14064-2 standard , which establishes the criteria for the quantification, monitoring and verification of greenhouse gas emission reduction projects. The success of this operation was made possible thanks to the jewel of the Swiss group: the factory Orca , located half an hour from the Icelandic capital Reykjavik, right next to the country's largest geothermal power plant, Hellisheiði.
